New York - The "Big Apple"

New York, the official name is City of New York, is one of the major global cities of the world and it is the largest and most important city in the United States of America. New York city is situated in the state of New York in the northeastern USA at the mouth of the Hudson River and the East River. The city is located on the three major islands of Manhattan, the western part of Long Island and Staten Island. The Bronx is the only borough of New York City which is a part of the mainland of the United States of America.

  • Queens (Queens County) is situated on the western part of Long Island and is geographically the largest borough of the city. Queens is home to many immigrants and two of New York's major airports, the John F. Kennedy International Airport and La Guardia Airport.
  • Staten Island (Richmond County) is located in the southwest of Manhattan and in the west of Brooklyn. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge connected Staten Island with Brooklyn.

The city is the cultutal and artistic centre at the American eastern coast. Most of the cultural attractions are situated in Manhattan and Ney York City offers the most free-standing individual skyscrapers with over 500 feet (152 metres) in the world. The skyline of the City of New York is one of the most distinctive in the world. The Empire State Building is a 102-story contemporary building in Art Deco style and finished in 1931. A public outdoor observatory at the 86th floor offers impressive 360-degree views of the city and is a popular tourist destination. The most important landmark of the city is the world-famous Statue of Liberty.
