The People's Republic of ChinaThe People's Republic of China is a country in East Asia. China is composed of a great variety of different landscapes, with lower lands to the east and mountains and plateaus to the west. Most of the rivers flow from west to east, like the Yangtze, Amur and Huang He and some to the south, like Pearl River, Mekong River and Brahmaputra. In the east, along the shores of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea are found extensive and densely populated alluvial plains, the shore of the South China Sea is more mountainous and southern China is dominated by hill country and lower mountain ranges.Beijing is the capital City of China and the largest city of the country is Shanghai. In the year 1997 Hong Kong, which was owned by the United Kingdom, and the leased New Territories were given to the People's Republic of China and in 1999 Macao was returned by Portugal. The climate of China offers a great variety. The northern part with Beijing has winters of Arctic severity. The central part with Shanghai has a temperate climate and the southern part with Guangzhou has subtropical climate and Tibet, which is still occupied by China, features a special high mountains climate.
