Of all the islands of the Parthenopean Gulf, Capri is the only one not of volcanic origin in this almost exclusively volcanic area. Capri has been settled since the Late Stone Age, as archeological excavations at the beginning of this century have confirmed. At the time the Phlegrean volcanoes were at their most active, Capri and the Sorrento Peninsula formed a solid block.
The "heart" of Capri is Piazza Umberto I: a small, closed-off square resembling a courtyard. Around the square there is the "Torre dell'Orologio", or Clock Tower, possibly the belltower of the old cathedral; the municipal offices (located in the former bishop's residence); a series of stores and cafes; and to the left, the San Stefano church.
The island of Capri, having no natural port, was accessible only from a small beach - probably one of the reasons emperor Tiberius preferred it, but necessity required the building of a port. To the west, at Point Vivara, the ruins of the ancient Roman port, giving direct access to the Imperial Villa of Palazzo a Mare, are still visible. Now the port is further east, crowded every day with boats and hydofoils coming from and going to other points of the Bay of Naples. At the port there is the tourist marina, where yachts and beautiful sailboats from all over the world steer into Capri.
The beautyful Hotel Paltium is located near the Palazzo a Mare, the ruins of a Roman villa, probably the summer residence of Emperor Tiberius Augustus. Hotel Palatium is the only Hotel at the marvellous Isle of Capri which descends to the deep blue Mediterranean and has direct access to a beach. Situated in the zone where the Emperor Tiberius Augustus spent his holidays by the sea, the Palatium looms above the rocky setting with its Pompeian red colour enjoying a magnificent view of entire Gulf of Naples and the Vesuvius.
Accommodation features: The Hotel Palatium is composed by 43 individually styled double rooms with 10 standard rooms, 16 junior suites 17 deluxe suites. All guestrooms, junior suites and suites are furnished with care and all the elegance of a stately residence.

• The 10 Standard Double Rooms are equipped with bath/shower and WC, air-conditioning, colour TV with satellite system, direct dial telephone and minibar.
• The 16 Junior Suites are equipped with living area, bath/shower and WC, air-conditioning, colour TV with satellite system, direct dial telephone and minibar. The junior suites offer balcony or terrace with view of the sea.
• The 17 Deluxe Suites are equipped with living area, bath/shower and WC, air-conditioning, colour TV with satellite system, direct dial telephone and minibar. The deluxe suites offer balcony or terrace with magnificent view of the Gulf of Naples.

Dining: The highlights is the Restuarant "La Scogliera", where breakfast consists of an American style "gran buffet" and you can dine by candlelight. The international cuisine also includes seafood specialities and you can enjoy all the tastes and flavours of the typical local dishes complimented by very good Italian vintages. The American Bar with its terrace overlooking the sea is ideal for getting an Apéritif or enjoying the nightly view of the lights of Naples by having some ice cooled cocktails.
Sports and Wellness: The large sea-water swimming pool reflects a mediterranean oasis and also features a spacious solarium with sun-beds, sun-umbrellas and hydromassage facilities. Positioned on the cliffs Hotel Palatium provides direct access to the beach. Make use of the gym or of the facilities the nearby Marina Grande provides - sailing, surfing, boat trips for snorkeling or scuba diving and more. Tennis courts are nearby.
