The Sandy Lane Hotel in St. James

Barbados is the most eastern island in the Caribbean, and is a tiny dot on most world maps with an area of 430 square kilometres. Barbados has a population of about 260,000 - which is quite high considering its size. On its western coast lie the sparkling waters of the Caribbean Sea and to the east, the wonderful strong breeze and dancing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. With 97 kilometres of coastline, Barbados has much to offer its visitors in terms of water sports and beach activities. The island is 34 kilometres long by 22 kilometres wide, and the highest point, Mount Hillaby, is just 373 metres and is located near the centre of the island and just west west of the breathtaking Scotland district. This dramatically rugged area comprises about one sixth of the island and meets the Atlantic in the northeast of the island. This is a clay area with jutting rocky spikes and ridges, and of course, breathtaking views. Bridgetown, originally called "Indian Bridge", is the capital and commercial centre of Barbados, with about 80,000 inhabitants. It is a busy port with a natural harbour inlet, known as the Careenage, and is well utilised by pleasure craft and fishing boats.
The Sandy Lane Resort, which recently underwent major reconstruction and expansion, is set in an ancient mahogany grove overlooking a gorgeous crescent of beach on Barbados' western coast. The architecture is classical Palladian style, like the original building, and the hotel features a luxurious white coral stone rotunda, Italian marble floors, plantation-style furniture and sumptuous décor.

Guestrooms & Suites : The Sandy Lane offers 112 guestrooms, of which 16 are suites and "The Villa at Sandy Lane". All spacious and luxurious guestroom and suites are equipped with air conditioning, celing fan, cable TV, alarm clock, radio, CD player, working desk with lamp, direct dial telephone, voicemail, modem, dataport, fax machine, minibar, safe and private bathroom with hairdryer and bathrobe.

The Orchid Rooms have a size of 72 squaremetres (779 square feet). These rooms are located in the Orchid Wing and overlook the tropical gardens. The bathrooms of these rooms are spacious and have a size of 27 squaremetres ((290 square feet). These marble bathrooms have a double vanity, separate tub and shower area, with WC and bidet located in their own room.
The Ocean Rooms have a size of 66 squaremetres (707 square feet) and they are located in the Turtle Wing. They overlook the clear, blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, and are centrally located. The bathrooms of these rooms include double vanity, bidet, WC, separate shower and tub.
The Luxury Ocean Rooms have a size of 81 square metres (867 square feet) and they are located in in the Seahorse Wing and the Dolphin Wing. They all have spectacular views of the sea and an impressive view of the sun setting in the evenings. The bathrooms of these rooms include a double vanity, bidet, WC, separate shower, tub, and a lady's make-up area.
The Two-Bedroom Luxury Orchid Suites have a size of 146 squaremetres (1,575 square feet) and they are located in the Orchid Wing. These suites overlook the tropical gardens and they offers a large patio for total comfort and relaxtion and afford a stunning view of the gardens. They include an elegant living room and dining area, along with a double vanity, bidet, WC, separate shower and tub in the master bedroom. The second bedroom has its own private balcony and separate tub and vanity in the bathroom.
The One-Bedroom Dolphin Suites have a size of 134 squaremetres (1,443 square feet) and they are located in the Dolphin Wing. These one-bedroom suites are set in a unique architectural style and afford a stunning view of the calm, tranquil waters of the Caribbean Sea. These suites offer a warm residential feel and they are very spacious and are enhanced by a large for total relaxation. They include a large living room, dining area and a master bedroom with double vanity, bidet, WC, separate shower, tub, walk-in closet and a separate powder room with WC and vanity.
The Two-Bedroom Luxury Dolphin Suites have a size of 146 squaremetre (1,575 square feet) and they are located in the Dolphin Wing with a refreshing view of the ocean and are elegantly decorated. They include a living room and dining area. In the master bedroom there is a walk-in closet, a double vanity, bidet, WC, separate shower and tub. There is also a separate powder room with WC, shower and vanity. The second guest bedroom has twin beds with its own private balcony.
The Penthouse Suites have a size of 369 squaremetres (3,971 square feet) and they are located in the Orchid Wing. These signature two bedroom penthouses have a unique décor and are set amidst the most beautifully manicured gardens. They consist of a large elegant foyer, living and dining area, kitchen, a master bedroom with double vanity, bidet, WC, separate shower and whirlpool tub, walk-in closets and a separate powder room with its own WC, shower and vanity.
These penthouse suites can connect to a two bedroom Luxury Orchid Suite to combine as a four-bedroom penthouse. The Luxury Orchid suite is 146 squaremetres (1,575 square feet) in size.
The Villa at Sandy Lane is located adjacent to the Spa at the legendary Sandy Lane Hotel. Cuisine & Cocktails : One of the most important elements of any holiday is the culinary experience. Sandy Lane has been designed in an elegant yet understated style and has four restaurants plus five bars located around the resort for your convenience and pleasure.

Sandy Lane's signature restaurant L'Acajou is located on the Foyer level and serves French international cuisine and fine wines in anair waterfront setting. The menu showcases the freshest island seafood, local delicacies and the best of imported products. Two hundred and fifty years ago the land on which Sandy Lane is built was a dense mahogany grove. Today several of these beautiful trees remain in front of the terrace to L'Acajou, which is the French translation for mahogany. The cuisine is prepared in a European style with hints of Asia, food that is innovative, exciting and full of different textures and flavours.
Bajan Blue is the hotel's all-day dining option, located on the Beach Level, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in a beachside setting. Bajan Blue Restaurant offers Mediterranean and Caribbean cuisine and you can enjoy the diverse cultures, which have influenced the Caribbean cuisine. Every effort has been made to incorporate local products and fresh ingredients in the menu.
The Spa Café is located on the pool level of the Spa. This is a delightful and casual poolside setting offering drinks and snacks throughout the day.
The Country Club Restaurant is ideally positioned overlooking the 18th green - perched on a ridge, high above the coastline with a stunning view across the rolling fairways down to the serene Caribbean Seas below. It is a wonderful spot for casual dining in an elegant atmosphere; the all-day menu offers light fare with a Caribbean flare and the service not only meets, but anticipates your every need.daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Country Club is as popular with golfers as it is with visitors all of whom are warmly welcomed. A visit to the beach will be a most relaxing experience. The attendants will ensure that you are seated in the location of your choice, and they will cater to your every need, providing you with all your food service and delivering refreshing chilled beverages to quench your thirst.
In the Spa at Sandy Lane, a splendid Romanesque building fronted by a spectacular waterfall cascading into the large freeform swimming pool, our therapists are ready and waiting to rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit.The world-class, unique facilities include VIP treatment suites enhanced with honed granites, warm woods and mood-enhancing light. Each suite offers a private shower, bathroom and changing facilities where you can relax and escape. Nine suites feature private landscaped gardens and three have hydrotherapy pools.
No visit to the beach would be complete without a walk south to the Beach Club, where a complete range of water sports is available under the guidance of our qualified water sports attendants. Activities include water-skiing, banana rides, kayaking, catamaran sailing … even a trip to swim with the turtles. Reservations for these and many more exciting activities can be made directly at the Beach Club. Scuba diving and deep-sea fishing charters can also be arranged through the Beach Club.
If you prefer to swim in fresh water, then visit the pool, which is adjacent to the Spa. Out of the water, your appetite can be satisfied on the pool deck with choices from the pool menu.
Children under the age of three can visit their "branch" of the Treehouse Club when accompanied by an adult. A selection of age-appropriate toys, puzzles and games are available for hours of fun out of the sun's rays.
The Den is for teenagers. Young adults aged 13 and over can enjoy their own lounge with an adjoining games room, featuring pool, air hockey and football … not to mention popular board games, a jukebox and the very latest high-tech computers. Activities include pool parties, island tours, sports clinics, water sports and coastal cruises.
The Tennis Club at Sandy Lane has nine championship floodlit tennis courts include a stadium court. There is a choice of a cushioned hard surface or an artificial grass surface.
The focal point of golf at Sandy Lane is the impressive Club House overlooking the 18th Hole of The Country Club Course and The Green Monkey. The clubhouse serves the three Sandy Lane courses: The Old Nine, the Tom Fazio designed Country Club Course and the spectacular Green Monkey Course.
Golfers will discover a rare treat at the new Sandy Lane. The famous "Old Nine" course, intimate yet challenging, still winds its way magically through the estate. Now it has been joined by the Country Club, a superb 18-hole Tom Fazio designed course with spectacularly panoramic vistas overlooking the Caribbean Sea - with the cooling north-easterly trade winds enhacing the challenge.
