A brief history of the Palais Coburg Hotel Residence

Hotel Palais Coburg Hotel Residenz: ExteriorThe Palais Coburg was built between 1840-1845 on the foundations of the ‘Braun' bastion, a section of Vienna's fortifications dating back to the 16th century. Consequently, a considerable portion of the old bulwark was preserved, in particular the ancient casemates. The architect Karl Schleps was commissioned by Prince Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha to design the Palais.

One notable feature of the Late Classicist architecture are the free-standing columns in the middle section of the façade, which quickly gave the Palais the nickname “asparagus castle” among the locals. The Palais remained in the possession of the family until 1978 with some members continuing to reside there until 1994.

After changing hands several times, the Palais Coburg was bought by the POK Pühringer Private Foundation in 1997 and renovated in close cooperation with the project's historic architect Dr. Klaus-Peter Högel and the Vienna Historical Monuments Department.

In terms of technical outfitting the suites offer individualized air conditioning, state-of-the-art locking systems, flat TVs in the living room and TVs with DVD players in the bedroom, CD player, numerous telephones, high-speed Internet access and mobile WLAN palmtop computers with classic Office applications, Intranet for the range of services offered by the Hotel, and video entry control. In addition to cable TV, there are also four English and German video channels offering a selection of classic films, comedies, action films and current trailers to round off the entertainment possibilities.

Coburg Imperial Suites

The three suites in the Coburg Imperial category meet the absolute highest standards of luxury and comfort. These generously proportioned suites are located directly above the historic state apartments and feature private terraces with an unobstructed view of the City Park. Despite their impressive, show-case character, the suites still live up to the motto of relaxed elegance. The colour design is focused on self-tone patterns, with materials and furniture from the late Biedermeier and Louis Philippe periods lending the rooms an exclusive character and atmosphere.
Suites range from 128 to 134 sqms

Palais Suites

There are 12 Palais Suites, all of which are located on the Ringstrasse side of the Palais. In their style and interior decoration, these suites give an impression of lightness and understatement. The textiles used in these suites are somewhat more reserved and subdued; the furniture is primarily from the early Biedermeier period.
Suites range from 71 to 130 sqms

City Suites

The 14 City Suites all face the Seilerstätte. The airy, Italian interior design style gives the rooms an fresh feeling. Light-toned furniture and steel frame and fabric beds are used in combination with light leather sofas. Shades range from sunny pastels and delicate salmon to vibrant olive green and Mediterranean terra cotta tones.
Suites range from 72 to 96 sqms

Modern Suites

Each of the four modern suites is unique. The Penthouse Suite, for example, offers a roof terrace, while there is an enchanting view of St. Stephan's cathedral from the free-standing bathtub of the Loft Suite with its waterbed. Patio and Winter Garden Suites all have their own private terraces.
Suites range from 54 to 100 sqms

Coburg Restaurant

Hotel Palais Coburg Hotel Residenz: The Coburg RestaurantThe Coburg Restaurant forms the culinary centrepiece of the Hotel. In this fine restaurant nestled in the heart of the Hotel, Christian Petz, chef of the year in 2002, continues his celebrated style: a clear, modern, purist cuisine ranked among the best in the world. The focus is on uncompromising quality of the basic ingredients, with a conscious decision to avoid trendy culinary fashions.

In addition to the revival of simple, traditional products and classic dishes, Petz's culinary style continues to place great emphasis on the subtle interplay of wine and cuisine. Naturally, the restaurant's wine list reflects this passion. It ranks among the best in the world, reflecting the Coburg Restaurant's firm dedication to offering the finest wines. While the Bastei Bar offers but a tempting glimpse of the wonders of the Palais Coburg's wine cellar, guests can also celebrate special occasions in this 'treasury of fine wine' with an aperitif or wine tasting.

In the afternoon, fresh baked pastries and Vienna's renowned coffee specialties give guests a perfect reason to lounge on the sunny terrace or relax in the lush green of the Garden Pavilion.

In the evenings, the Bastei Bar is transformed into an attractive, enchanting location for relaxing and chilling out after office hours, with music and a fabulously wide selection of wines, backed up by a delicious offering of light gourmet meals and appetizers.
