Sandoway Resort, Mya Pyin Village, Ngapali Beach,Thandwe, Rakhine State, Myanmar (Burma).
The Sandoway Resort is located amongst palms on the pristine Ngapali Beach in the state Rakhine in the West of Myanmar facing the Bay of Bengal.
Stretching for over 1,930 kilometers from the North Himalayan region to the South tip of the Tenasserim region, which faces the Andaman Sea, Burma (Myanmar) borders India and Bangladesh to the North West and West, China, Laos and Tibet -occupied by China- to the North East and Thailand to the East and South East. With a civilisation that's more than 2,500 years old, Burma (Myanmar) possesses a rich and vibrant cultural tradition. Great natural beauty combines with magnificent temple architecture and everywhere the visitor encounters welcoming and hospitable people.
Myanmar was once one of Asia's most inaccessible countries. Having turned its back on the world, Myanmar escaped the excesses of commercialisation. As a result, the country has retained an enviable way of life from which we can all learn. Today Myanmar hasd her doors, and as a tourist destination is just beginning to flower, presenting a terrific opportunity for those who wish to explore this unique land.
Buddhism, more than anything else, has shaped Burmese history and culture. Eighty-five percent of the population today follow the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, a royal prince who lived some 2,500 years ago in India. Though bought up surrounded by wealth and luxury, he eventually renounced worldly riches and devoted his life to teaching.
Following the Buddha's death, the Buddhist world divided into two schools. Theravada Buddhists believe you are an individual on your own and feel they adhere more to the Buddha's original thinking. Tha Mahayana school believes an individual's life is linked to others, thus affecting the world. Buddhists believe that all humanity is subject to pain and suffering from birth to death, and tolerance and forgiveness should supercede, vengeance and hatred. Although Myanmar is a devoutly Buddhist country, the people have retained a wealth of lore and superstitions which date back to the animistic beliefs of their ancestors. Buddhism, a tolerant faith, does not contradict these earlier traditions, which have become entwined with the national religion, giving a rich texture to spiritual life.
Ngapali is a 3 kilometers long white sandy and unspoilt beach overlooking the clear blue water of Bay of Bengal, backed by swaying coconut palm and casuarinas trees. After sunset the sea in front of the beach is enlighted by several lamps of the fishermen boats until morning. Before dawn on the shore other fishermen begin setting und drawing drift nets until late morning when they load their catches in baskets.
The surrounding is plenty of small villages you can reach by bicycle or by walking along the beach. Thandwe, the most important village of the area, has an interesting market set in a former British jail where traditional medicine herbs, clothes, textile , hardware and food are sold.
Hidden amongst hundreds of coconut palms and set amidst the tropical garden, most with ocean view, built in traditional South East Asian Style is the four-star Sandoway Resort, a new landmark in Ngapali.
