Hoch über der Bucht von Portofino gelegen ist das Hotel Splendido, gehört zu einer der Attraktionen von Portofino. Das Hotel Splendido hat eine bewegte Vergangenhei. Ursprünglich wurde es als Benediktiner Kloster erbaut und war im 16. Jahrhundert ein beliebtes Angriffsziel der Sarazenen. Die Mönche gaben es schließlich auf und überließen es dem Zerfall. Im 19. Jahrhundert kaufte Baron Baratta die Ruine und baute sie zur Sommerresidenz der Familie aus. Der Bau liegt in ost-westlicher Richtung und folgt dem Berghang und hat so eine atemberaubende Sicht auf das Meer.
Im Jahre 1901 baute Ruggero Valentini, der Pionier des Tourismus in Portofino, die Villa Baratta in das Grand Hotel Splendido um und seither beherbergt es viele bekannte Persönlichkeiten aus Politk, Wirtschaft und Kunst. Zimmerbeschreibungen: Das Hotel Splendido bietet 4 Einzelzimmer, 30 Doppelzimmer, 25 Juniorsuiten und 7 Suiten. Die meisten Zimmer bahen einen Balkon oder Terrasse mit Blick auf das Meer oder den Hafen von Portofino. Alle Gästezimmer, Juniorsuiten und Suiten sind geschmackvoll und elegant eingerichtet und sind ausgestattet mit Badezimmer und Dusche und teilweise mit Jacuzzi, Bademantel, Haartrockner, Klimaanlage, Selbstwahltelefon, Satelliten TV mit Video und Minibar.

Die Dopplezimmer mit Meerblick sind größer und komfortabler als die Standard-Zimmer, die meisten haben einen herrlichen Blick auf das Meer entweder aus den großen Fenstern oder dem Balkonen und einigen haben Blick auf den Tennisplatz. Einige der Badezimmer sind mit einem Doppelwaschbecken ausgestattet.

Die Badezimmer sind groß und die meisten verfügen über eine separate dusche und Doppelwaschbecken.
Alle Superior Suiten verfügen über einen separaten Wohnraum, und bis auf einen dieser Suiten haben alle einen Balkon oder Terrasse mit Meerblick. Einige Terrassean sind groß genug für Sonnenliegen. Sie haben Twin-Betten oder Doppelbetten, eine dieser Suiten hat ein King-Bett.
Die Deluxe Suitenen entweder einen Balkon oder einen Terrasse, einige haben sogar zwei Terrassen mit atemberaubenden Blick auf das Meer. Die Schlafzimmer sind groß und herrlich eingerichtet in den gleichen Farben wie die Wohnräume und haben einen begehbaren Ankleideraum. Die Badezimmer verfügen über eine Badewanne, eparate Dusche und Doppelwaschbecken.
Die Executive Suites wurden erst kürzlich komplett renoviert und sind sehr geräumig mit atemberaubender Sicht von den Terrassen auf die Küste von Portofino und Tigullio. Surrounded by pine trees and olive groves, Portofino retains the charm of the fishing village it once was, while offering an atmosphere of sophistication and elegance. The sub-tropical climate typical of the Ligurian coast-line allows the growth of many specimens not found anywhere else in Italy, but in the deep south. A favorite destination of the yachting set, Portonino's picturesque harbour plays host to flotillas of colourful sailing craft, from fishing boats to ocean-going yachts. One of Portofino's most attractions is the Hotel Splendido. Originally a monastery, the four-story building was attacked with such frequency in the sixteenth century by Saracen pirates that the monks abandoned it to the sheep that roamed the coastal hills. In the nineteenth century, Baron Baratta revived the wreck, converting it into a family summer house. It had been built on an east-west axis, following the contour of the hill, so that as well as having views of the sea from all its principal windows, it also had the sun all day. In 1901 Mr. Ruggero Valentini, the pioneer of tourism at Portofino, transformed Villa Baratta into the Grand Hotel Splendid. Since the beginning the hotel has played host to the most famous and noble families in Europe and the cream of the international jet-set. Hotel Splendido offers the highest standards of international house-keeping in a relaxed atmosphere.
The charming branch of the Hotel Splendido is Hotel Splendido Mare, situated in the heart of Portofino village with wonderful views of harbour and the castle of San Giorgio.
Accommodation features: The Hotel Splendido offers 4 single rooms, 30 double rooms, 25 junior suites and 7 suites. Most of the rooms have balcony or terrace with a view of the sea and many overlook Portofino's beautiful harbour. All rooms and suites are superbly equipped, offering every amenity including air conditioning, bathrobe, hairdryer, direct dial telephone, satellite television, video and minibar. Each has it's own private bathroom with shower, and many bathrooms feature Jacuzzis.

Some of the Single Rooms do not afford significant views, though they are well appointed and feature the amenities common to all other rooms, including mini-bar and TV, while others feature a larger than single bed and afford a breathtaking view from the balcony. Decor and amenities are both pleasant and functional. Bathrooms are spacious and equipped with bath-tub with in-built shower.
The Standard Rooms are tastefully appointed in sober pastel colours, one of these rooms faces the sea and others overlook the hotel entrance and the hill slope. Bathrooms are equipped with single vanity, heated towel-racks, weight scale and a fine assortment of toiletries.
The Double Rooms Seaview are larger and more comfortable than the standard, most of these rooms afford a spectacular sea-view either from windows or balconies and some overlook the tennis court. Some bathrooms are equipped with double vanities.
The Double Rooms Balcony are even more spacious and well appointed, most have sea-view with a balcony or terrace. Some overlooking the sea and others the hill slope. Some bathrooms feature double vanities and walk-in showers and all are equipped with bath-tub. Some of these rooms can accommodate an extra bed.
The Superior Junior Suites are charming, well furnished and spacious. These junior suites offer guaranteed sea-view (except one), most with a large balcony or terrace. All bathrooms feature double vanities, separate privies and walk-in showers and always a bath-tub. Some offer a spacious walk-in wardrobe.
All of the Deluxe Junior Suites command a breathtaking view of the Gulf and the harbour of Portofino from either balconies or terraces. Some offer two terraces equipped with sun-beds, table and chairs. Bathrooms are large, well-lit and feature comfortable amenities.
The Executive Junior Suites are recently restructured and refurbished. These suites are large and comfortable, furnished with king size or twin beds, tastefully appointed and equipped with mini-bar, direct dial phone, multichannel satellite TV, fax and P.C. connections. This junior suites have large bathrooms, most with separate shower and double basin.
All Superior Suites feature a separate sitting room and offer a guaranteed sea-view from balconies or terraces, only one with windows. Some terraces are large enough to accommodate sun-beds. Most have twin/double beds, one has a king size.
Some Deluxe Suites offer two terraces with breathtaking sea-view, others have balconies or terraces. Bedrooms are large and well appointed in the same colour scheme of the sitting room and often feature walk-in changing-rooms. Bathrooms are equipped with bath-tub and walk-in shower, double vanities.
The Exclusive Suites are recently restructured and refurbished, they are the largest and most dramatically situated with astonishing views, terraces overlooking Portofino's Cove and the Tigullio. Equipped with king size or twin beds, most comforts, fax and P.C. connections. The bathrooms are very large with separate showers, double basins and double armoires. They are tastefully decorated in Mediterranean colour schemes.

From spring to autumn, the Poolside Snacks and Bar serves alfresco, buffet-style lunches and snacks, including an array of regional specialities and a wide selection of beverages. Patio furniture makes for a casual setting where you can enjoy superb views and dips in the pool.
